After I had been on the island for ten or twelve days, it occurred to me that I would lose the measure of time. This was because I had neither watch nor calendar. To prevent this, I cut with my knife upon a large post the date of my landing; I put a notch with my knife for everyday.
After a long spell of rain, I saw some fair weather around 7th November. I spent the next couple of days making small wood boxes to keep my provisions dry from the rain.
Among the things I rescued from the ship there was a small bag of corns meant for poultry feed. Most of it had been devoured by rats. I saw nothing but husks and dusts in the bag. I emptied the contents outside my wall. This was a little time before the great rains. A month later I discovered green stalks shooting out of the ground. I was astonished to discover it was perfect green barley. By the June of 1660, I had gained security of food and shelter.

3. Read the passage carefully and answer the questions given below :
Alipurduar/Jalpaiguri : Heavy showers in the Bhutan hills, along with the Sub-Himalayan Bengal, triggered a surge in water levels in several rivers flowing into Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri districts, including the Torsha, the Sankosh and the Rydak. The swollen rivers have swept away houses at the Bamandanga—Tondu tea estate in Nagrakata block of Jalpaiguri, claiming at least five lives.
The torrential rain in North Bengal has so far claimed 23 in North Bengal, including 18 in Darjeeling and 5 in Jalpaiguri. Of the 18 in Darjeeling, 11 have died in Mirik alone.
"In Jalpaiguri, the most flood-affected areas are at the tri-junction of three rivers, the Murti, the Diana and the Jaldhaka under Nagrakata, Banarhat, Maynaguri and Dhupguri Police Stations. The bodies have been recovered, and rescue and relief work is in progress," said Khandbahale Umesh Ganpat, the Jalpaiguri Superintendent of Police.
The swollen rivers and streams have also flooded the Jaldapara and Gorumara National Parks — two prominent reserve forests in Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri districts. Streams and rivers like the Holong, the Shisamara, the Torsha and the Buri Torsha have inundated vast areas of Jaldapara, causing significant damage to both infrastructure and wildlife.
The Holong bridge, which connects the Madarihat Tourist Lodge, the Assistant Wildlife Warden's office to Madarihat, has been completely washed away.
At the time of flooding, 24 tourists were staying at the tourist lodge; 9 have been rescued with the help of pet elephants of the State Forest Department, while 15 are still there at the accommodation. Wild animals including rhinos, deer and gaurs were seen being swept away by the Torsha from the Jaldapara National Park. A rhino was also swept away by the swollen Jaldhaka river from the Gorumara National Park.
